During the summer, flat OTR tyre accidents happen more often as a result of high temperatures as  any moving part will gradually begin to build up heat. Make sure you use OTR tyres with the right quality to meet your vehicles speed and load.

These are the main factors resulting in tyre problems:
1、Tyre pressure is too high or low.
2、Tyres have been used for too long
3、The rubber surface is aging and cracking
4、Abrasion of the tread is reaching its limit
5、The wheel rim is deformed or damaged
7. If the tread of your tyre is damaged replace it as soon as possible.

Prevention
Check your tyre pressures before driving to prevent breakdowns. After a long period of running, the heat generated by friction can’t be distributed as well. When heat is not distributed properly, the pressure inside the tyre increases. Uneven heat distribution and abrasion increases the chance of a tyre explosion.

When you have been driving for a long time in high temperatures, place vehicles in the shade to allow the vehicle and tyres it to cool down naturally. If you are driving at high speeds for an hour or more, slow down to allow heat dissipation from the tyres.

Take care when pulling over to avoid running the tyre along the roadside. When the sidewall is damaged it can lead to more serious problems such as broken steel wires and steel ring buckles. Avoid using the emergency brakes on acceleration. Do this frequently and you risk tyres deforming increasing the chance of a tyre burst.

Carry loads within manufactures limitations. Every tyre has its maximum load, and it is set according to the manufacture’s regulations or ask an expert.

It is essential that tyre removal, replacement and inflation should be tackled only by competent staff and that staff comply with all applicable fitting and safety instructions.

Manual handling injuries account for nearly a half of all tyre-related incidents. Manual handling is the lifting, carrying, supporting or moving of heavy or bulky loads by hand or bodily force. These are usually caused as a result of a single lift of a heavy object. This is the cause of over 30% of all injuries in motor vehicle repairs.

Less common but potentially more dangerous are compressed air accidents of larger tyres.  These can be from a ruptured or burst tyre or violent separation of the component parts of the wheel. These accidents are more serious and result in more serious injuries, including fatalities.

The reasons are that inflated tyres contain a large amount of stored energy, which varies according to the inflation pressure and the surface area of the tyre (e.g. the sidewall of a typical commercial vehicle tyre has to withstand over 34 tonnes of force from compressed air before additional carriage weight is taken into account).

If the tyre fails, an explosive force can be released at an angle of up to 45 degrees from the rupture, which is often, but not always, the face of the sidewall. This has resulted in numerous fatalities over the years in the UK and across the world.

Tyre damage can be difficult to see and diagnose

As a safety precaution the condition of wheels and tyres should be checked at the ‘before use’ inspection for defects such as fatigue cracks in the wheel and bulges in the tyre wall. The person carrying out the examination should be competent to examine the type of wheel.

If safety critical defects are identified the wheel/tyre should be withdrawn from use. You should not attempt to repair a wheel as repairs to wheels and their components can affect the strength and integrity of the assembly. It is strongly recommended, for your own safety and efficiently, that you contact a specialist tyre repair and replacement company.

Compaction

Compaction is a problem for farmers and growers and has an impact on vehicles using fields and field tracks. This is why modern farming techniques use set lanes through crops. Compaction in fields is inevitable it can be managed but not eliminated.  Compression affects soil structure and fertility which is why it is essential to set and use specific lanes.

 Controlling the use of large vehicles improves planting, spraying, harvesting and minimises potential yield losses from compaction. Surprisingly using specific lanes through crops means the compacted soil under wheel tracks provides better flotation and improves traction for vehicles when fields are wet.

The majority of tractors weigh less than 10 tons per axle, but newer 4WD tractors can weigh almost as much as a loaded combine.  Field tracks have to cope with these and larger heavier equipment such as combines, grain carts and liquid manure tankers. These have enormous and axle loads and can be as high as 40 tons.

 Total axle load, as well as contact pressure between tyres and soil increases as tyre size increases. This avoids large increases in contact pressure (pounds per square inch) by the tyre on the soil surface. To improve tractor efficiency it is essential to use the proper tyres and tyre inflation pressure. This can also reduce the force of the compaction from the tyres.

Not everything we do involves big tyres!

Not everything we do involves big tyres! As many business owners do, we are always looking for ways to diversify. When we set Earthmover Tyre Solutions Ltd we bought a site with easy access to roads and motorway networks, so our UK wide repairs service could function efficiently.

Our site base fulfils this and it also came with a large lake. This deep clear lake was formed from an old quarry that was originally stocked with carp over a 6 year period up to 2009. Never one to miss an opportunity in 2015, 12 low double commons and five specimen mirrors to 25lb were also added to the original stock. The lake with carp and perch and it has become very popular largely due to the work of our lake manager Gordon Razey.

Combining our desire to diversify and our commitment to support this part of Yorkshire we charity fund raise every month. With the help of our fishermen friends we successfully raise money for a variety of local and national charities.

Tyres for quarry Earth mover vehicles

Getting the most from tyres in any industry is critical and can save or cost a business. Tyres are one of the most expensive parts, of any Earth mover businesses, that are subject to wear and tear. Next to fuel tyres make up a large percentage of the operating costs of any specialist or Earth mover vehicle.
Tyre choice, road and track maintenance, tyre protection and correct fitting and planned maintenance, all contribute to the efficiency of your operations and your business.

Tyres for quarry vehicles are expensive. However tyre manufacturers are now developing designs with improved efficiency to extend the life of tyres and make them work more efficiently and safely.
For example the XADN offers more damage-resistant sidewalls, a more durable tread and greater longevity. Michelin predict an 8-15% increase in tyre life. The XADN is more environmentally friendly than previous models, due to the rubber compound which uses 14kg less natural raw material per tyre than previous models.

Bridgestone offers tyres for Earth mover vehicles and in particular the VLTS traction tyre which has  been specifically designed to work on rocky or gravel surfaces, such as in quarries. Bridgestone say they offer superior cut resistance and longer life.

Mitas Tyres is an established tyre producer from the Czech Republic making inroads into the earth mover tyre industry. Already popular in the agricultural sector, the company is turning its attention to the quarry market. At the last Hillhead show Mitas introduced the ERD-40 pattern tyre for ADTs. Available in 23.5R25 and 26.5R25 sizes the deep tread pattern tyre is specifically designed for quarry and mining use.

With experience and the best equipment even the largest tyre can be safely retreaded for less than 40 to 50% than the cost of a new, premium tyre. This represents a substantial amount of savings.
For maximum life from an earthmover tyre probably means having a tyre repaired. Like earthmover tyre solutions there are a number of companies who specialise in tyre repairs for heavy earthmoving equipment. Make sure the company you choose has a good track record and uses the latest auto clave equipment.

Tyres for forestry Equipment

Tyres for forestry equipment is something of an unknown area. Earth mover vehicles in forest location presents some of the same challenges that using earth mover vehicles in quarrying, dock side and in agriculture have, but it also presents its own challenges.

Putting aside safety and efficiency respect for the environment and the need to minimise damage is a big issue, especially on soft ground. And this is not just when timber is being felled, timber wagons make repeated journeys into the forests for a variety of reasons, including maintenance, planting and transportation of logs.

Factors include how heavy the vehicles used are and this is influenced by number of wheels, tyre pressure, tyre dimensions, tyre tread and traction aids that increase the area through which the weight of the machine is transferred to the ground. A large contact area with the ground area produces less surface pressure and means vehicles have less chance of sinking even in soft soil and as important has less effect of the forest floor.

This also gives stability and improved manoeuvrability on soft ground, steep slopes and rough rocky tracks. Vehicles also needs stability in order to climb in rough terrain. Using the correct tyres increases machine stability, improves flotation and protects tyres, extending their usage. As with all earth mover tyres, tyres for forestry equipment must be used at the appropriate pressure, as stated by the manufacturer.

Interestingly demand for forestry tyres is increasing around the world and in the UK, including Scotland and large areas of the north. Vehicles need to safely access difficult sites, slopes and in the winter through snow and ice producing more challenges.

Manufacturers produce track types in a range of models to suit different tyre specifications and operating conditions. Wider-spaced tracks with narrower plates are better suited to harder ground conditions and steeper slopes, offering greater climbing ability. Closely spaced tracks with wide plates are better suited to soft ground conditions. Tracks with closely spaced plates are not suited for use in heavy snow or some types of heavy mud.

June is a busy month for us as we gear up for Driffield show. This is our first county show and we are planning for more to follow as a way to meet our existing customers, find new ones and generally spread the word about what we do. We will be sending out invites with details of how to find us and we will be holding a competition with an exciting prize!

We want to use Driffield show to demonstrate what we do and we have a trailer with refreshments and images of some of our work. We'll also be bringing along one of our big trucks and a very large tyre to demonstrate what we typically do on a day to day basis with our 24 hour call out and tyre repairs.

In 2006 over 100,000 worn tyres were taken off cars, trucks and earthmover vehicles. About 70% of these tyres were recycled, 28% were added to landfill or stockpiled and created a major waste problem.

Piles of stockpiled tyres can present a fire hazard, even tyres in landfill sites can be ignited.  Once started, these fires are difficult to extinguish and can burn for days as we often see in the news. Burning tyres give off some serious pollutants including water borne pollutants.  Tyres in landfill sites can be unstable and tend to rise to the surface, creating potential  fire hazards and limiting options for future land use.

Now under the EU Landfill Directive whole tyres including agricultural and earthmover tyres are banned from  landfill.  Small numbers of discarded tyres are being given new life as boat fenders and playground equipment. However in reality re-treading of used tyres and recovery of materials are the main methods of recycling.

For trucks, retreading is a well-established part of tyre management, reducing both cost and environmental impact. When the time comes to change your tyres, you can reduce the impact of tyres on the environment by opting for a retreaded tyre?

Re-treading doubles the life of a tyre, reducing the numbers of new tyres needed and minimising waste.  There are two methods of retreading tyres. The pre-cure process involves bonding a new rubber tread onto the prepared tyre casing. In the mould-cure process, uncured rubber is applied to the casing and vulcanised in a mould to give the new tread. For truck tyres 8 retreads are sold for every 10 new tyres.

Approximately 500,000 tonnes of used tyres are created from tyre sales outlets and vehicle dismantlers. About 80% of used tyre arising are collected and processed by operators subscribing to the Industry’s Responsible Recycler Scheme.

Recovery of materials from tyres has become more efficient. The main technique is to shred and reduce the rubber to crumb, and use this as a moulding material or filler.  Applications include brake linings, carpet underlay, equestrian, sports and safety surfaces, including playgrounds, as well as surfacing for roads, paths, and low grade use as landscape mulch or waste oil absorbent.
