As important as fitting and maintenance of tyres for safety, storage is as important and is often overlooked

Storage must take place:

  • In clean, airy, dry, temperate and well-ventilated premises, sheltered from direct sunlight and bad weather;
  • Away from any chemical substance, solvent or hydrocarbon likely to alter the nature of the rubber.
  • Well away from any object which might penetrate the rubber such as metal spikes, hooks and sharp or pointed wooden planks and
  • Well away from any source of heat, naked flames, equipment likely to give off sparks or electric discharges and any source of ozone, such as transformers, electric motors, welding sets, etc

Incorrect tyre handling can cause damage, and can injure operators. Eliminate risks of damage to tyres and operators:

  • Do not lift a tyre directly with the hook of a crane, instead use flat straps, not metal slings or chains
  • Do not pick a tyre up under the tread
  • Make sure you comply with the safety instructions at the site where you are working
  • Operators must be wearing suitable personal protective equipment.
