Keep safe and work efficiently - checklist

Tyres are the only point of contact between your plant machine and the ground, so it is crucial for  performance of your to make sure their quality and performance are maintained.

4 types of machines that use big tyres
1. Compactor
2. Grader
3. Earthmoving
4. Loader and bulldozer

Maintaining performance and Safety

  • Read the markings on the sidewalls of your tyres – it will tell you the product best suited to your needs
  • To get the best performance from your machine consider the surface conditions and surface type where you will working.
  • To choose the right tyres for your machine know the Tonne Kilometres/Miles per Hour. This is the working capacity of your tyres.
  • Once fitted inspect your tyres to regularly to spot any damage or irregular wear
  • Any cuts or distortions you see on the tread or sidewalls of your tyres or wheels should be checked by a tyre professional
  • Use a depth gauge to check the tread of your tyres at several points on the tyre to keep safe and legal
  • Correct tyre inflation is essential factor to make sure you get the best performance and to keep you safe. Use the inflation pressure recommended by the tyre manufacturer.
  • Correct pressure will extend the life of your tyres.
  • Prevention of problems is key.  A tyre which has run under-inflated or flat may have suffered irreversible damage
  • It’s not only when tyres are on your machine you must store tyres carefully
  • Store tyres in clean, airy, dry and well-ventilated premises, sheltered from direct sunlight and bad weather
  • Keep tyres away from any chemical substance, solvent or hydrocarbon
  • Keep tyres well away from sharp objects which might penetrate the rubber
  • Keep tyres away from obvious heat sources such as naked flames and less obvious such as equipment likely to emit sparks or electric discharges, transformers, electric motors or welding sets
  • It is therefore very important to have tyres fitted by trained fitters. – make this a button
  • Correct fitting of tyres is essential to ensure safety and to make sure your machine is safe to use.
